
Defense Strategies Against Oral Infections
Many oral infections can be prevented by maintaining good oral hygiene.
- Follow these tips to prevent the risk of oral Infections-
The Do's:
- Brush Regularly: at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss Daily: because it helps remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gumline.
- Use Mouthwash: preferably those containing Povidone-iodine because of its anti-septic properties.1
- Eat a Balanced Diet: rich in fruits and vegetables to strengthen your teeth and gums. 2
- Replace Your Toothbrush: every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
- Visit the Dentist regularly: to catch problems early and receive guidance on maintaining oral health.
- Quit Smoking: because tobacco use risks gum disease and oral cancer.2
The Don'ts:
- Don't skip dental appointments: even if you're feeling fine, because prevention is better than cure.
- Don't consume excessive sugary foods and drinks: as they can lead to tooth decay.
- Don't consume too much alcohol: as they can contribute to oral health problems.2
- Don't smoke or chew tobacco: as they can cause gum disease and oral cancer.2
Additional considerations:
- In Children: Restrict bottle feeding to meal times, and don't allow your baby to sleep with a bottle to prevent early childhood caries.
- In Women: Hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can impact oral health. Hence, they should maintain good oral hygiene and not skip dental appointments.
- In Older Adults: missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures can affect the ability to chew and swallow properly. Hence, get your teeth fixed as soon as possible.
- In People with HIV/AIDS: there is an increased risk of oral infections. Hence, Regular dental checkups are crucial.
Maintaining these simple tips can help you prevent the risk of oral infections.
